What is extension of visa?
Foreign residents have to carry out the necessary procedures before visa term expires, when they will continue the same activities as their current given visa allows.
Generally, the residence term for foreign residents who came to Japan for reasons such as Specialist in Humanities / International Service or Spouse Japanese national is 1 year or 3 years. If this term expires and you are on a Specialist in Humanities / International Service visa who wishes to work or a spouse of a Japanese national who wishes to live in Japan, you must carry out the necessary procedures for the “Application for Extension of Period of Stay” at your local immigration bureau branch by the expiration date of your visa.
Please keep in mind that if you neglect these procedures and your term of residence expires, it is grounds for enforcement of deportation for overstay. Generally applications are accepted three months before the end of the residence term.
