The long term resident visa is for a person who has been approved by the Minister of Justice to live in Japan for a set period of time for special reasons.

Targeted Persons of Visa
Residence qualifications for a long-term resident are as follows:
1. Biological grandchild of Japanese national
2. Spouse of Japanese national’s child
3. Spouse of long-term resident
4. Biological child of a permanent resident, being born overseas, minor and unmarried
5. Biological child of a long-term resident, minor and unmarried
6. Biological child of Japanese national’s spouse, minor and unmarried
7. Biological child of permanent resident’s spouse, minor and unmarried
8. Person who was specially approved by the immigration bureau to continue to live in Japan after divorcing from a Japanese person or being bereaved of his/her spouse.

People who fulfill ALL of the following:
(1) People who are lawfully married to a Japanese person
The “Spouse” category does not include de facto marriages.
(2) People who are living and cooperating with their spouse
Furthermore, the marriage must fit the generally accepted concept of married lifestyle in that the relationship must be formal (lawful), and the couple should be substantially living together, cooperating and mutually aiding each other.
3. Spouse of a long-term resident
People who fulfill ALL of the following:
(1) People who are lawfully married to a Japanese person
The “Spouse” category does not include de facto marriages.
(2)People who are living and cooperating with their spouse

4. Biological child of a permanent resident, born overseas, minor and unmarried
People who fulfill either (1)or (2) in addition to (3)
(1) A biological child who was born after their father or mother had already become a permanent or long-term resident
(2) In the case the father passed away before the birth of the child: A biological child of a person who became a permanent or long-term resident before the father passed away
(3) The child must be under 20 years of age and unmarried
5. Biological child of a long-term resident, minor and unmarried
People who fulfill either (1) or (2) in addition to (3)
(1) A biological child who was born after their father or mother had already become a permanent or long-term resident
